Managing UP

Managing Up: Become an Indispensable Resource
“Managing the boss is a way to have a win-win-win situation where everyone, including the organization and projects, wins.”

  • Are you considered a resource for your boss?
  • Do you know your boss’ personal style?
  • Can your boss tell their boss what you have done successfully lately?
  • Do you drop problems on your boss’ desk and run?
When I ask staff if they they think they should manage their boss, typically I get a resounding “no”.  Yet, when I ask the managers in the room if they want to be managed by their team they say “yes”.  Your boss wants to be managed!
Management can be quite a difficult task. Not only does your boss have their work, projects, team, schedule, tasks while at the same time report to his boss progress on you. They want your help.

“Doing what you can to make your manager’s job easier will not only help them do their job, but you will be considered a valuable asset to your manager and to your organization,”
Ms. Badowski, executive assistant to Jack Welch at General Electric Co
In this class Managing Up we will review some key components to how to manage your boss. Do you bring them choices to problems that come up? Do they need data and information?
